Material World - Stainless Steel

Stainless steel has long been a staple in the top commercial kitchens of restaurants around the world and, more and more, the “commercial look” is finding its way into residential kitchens. Stainless steel is showing up on appliances, coffee machines, gas grills, even electrical plate covers. Is stainless steel here to stay or is it yesterday’s avocado appliances?

Initially seen as a fad in residential construction, experts now say stainless steel is here to stay. Sales of stainless steel appliances haven’t slowed and builders continue to offer stainless steel options in their homes. Additionally, the look can integrate with just about any home style and budget – that’s why builders and remodelers find they are adding stainless steel to the kitchens of homes ranging from quaint cottages to modern masterpieces.

Stainless steel has been used in big budget commercial kitchens because of its durability, ease of maintenance, and ease of sanitation. In recent years, appliance manufacturers have started selling lines of consumer directed, less expensive stainless steel fixtures and appliances. While a comparable “all white” kitchen does cost less than a comparable stainless steel filled kitchen, buyers are willing to pay extra for the luxury of the look.

Maintenance of stainless steel can take a little extra work. While no kitchen material is maintenance free, a trip to the kitchen of most restaurants will show that this material is probably the most durable. It needs continual wiping and cleaning to keep that dull glow, but once clean, it returns to near original luster. Some appliance manufacturers have a solution: they are developing special finishes that keep the look of stainless steel, but hide fingerprint smudges and water drops.

Stainless steel offers another option for the kitchen instead of traditional white or black, or the integrated look in which everything looks like a cabinet door. Its versatility can match most looks and buyers continue to desire that dull glow in their kitchens.
