Despite Cold December Weather, New Home Sales Hot December’s numbers are in and though the sun may not be glowing, the U.S. Department of Commerce statistics related to new home sales are. New homes are being built and sold at a record pace in what is traditionally the slowest time of the year for new construction. As for new home construction, single-family housing starts in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,644,000 units. This is 13.8 percent (±8.5%) above the December 2002 rate of 1,462,000. For the year, 1,498,500 homes were started in 2003. This is a 10.35 percent increase over 2002, in which 1,358,600 homes were started.
As for new home sales, there were 973,000 single-family homes sold in 2002. In 2003, there were 1,085,000 new homes sold, which is an increase of 11.5%. For December 2003 alone, new home sales hit a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.060 million units.
