Small Houses That Require Big Imaginations The size of the
average American home has nearly tripled in the past century – from
only 800 square feet in 1900, to 983 square feet in 1950 and 2,265
square feet in 2000. As "McMansions" continue to pop up all
over suburban America, more housing advocates, environmentalists and
designers are promoting the smaller, smarter house concept. These houses– sprinkled around the outdoor shopping complex, Fashion Island, in Newport Beach, California – would please even the staunchest of square foot Scrooges. Not really intended to house the typical family, these tiny playhouses are donated by homebuilders throughout Southern California as part of HomeAid Orange County Project Playhouse. Each house is fully landscaped and designed around a theme such as "My Little Beach Bungalow", "Home Tweet Home" and "Gepetto's Workshop". Details on these miniature masterpieces range from energy efficient Low-E windows, copper roofs, solar panels, marble floors, working plumbing and electrical with high-speed Internet ready wiring, plasma TV with DVD, and more. Yes, things were very different when we were children. |
